Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Tidal flats are created by swift currents and exposed when the tide goes out. Sand and mud flats in coastal wetlands provide food for migratory shorebirds. Each species finds the zone for its foraging style and appetite. Adjacent upland and transitional habitats provide nesting and roosting areas.

black tern
Black Terns are uncommon, but distinctive visitors. Unlike other terns, which are silver and white, Black Terns are all black in spring and summer and dark gray in fall. They visit Plymouth Beach en route between their breeding habitat in freshwater marshes in northern Maine and Canada and their wintering grounds at sea in the tropical North Atlantic. You are most likely to see them resting on sand flats with other terns.
